By conducting research on the world’s major rivers with a focus on the Mississippi River, the Louisiana State University (LSU) Center for River Studies is empowering the next generation of engineers, geologists, and river experts.

The center houses one of the world’s largest movable physical models – the Lower Mississippi River Physical Model. The model is able to replicate the flow, water levels, and sediment (sand) transport of the river and can simulate one year of the Mississippi River in just one hour. Scientists, engineers, and students can see, experience, and conduct meaningful research using this state-of-the-art model.

LSU Center for River Studies is made possible through a partnership with the Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority, or CPRA. The center’s interactive exhibit space offers opportunities for guests of all ages to learn more about the history of the Mississippi River, Louisiana’s disappearing wetlands, and ongoing coastal restoration projects across the coast.

LSU’s collaboration

As a contributing academic expert for Rivers Are Life, LSU’s collaboration stems from its Center for River Studies program, which focuses on the health of the Mississippi River. The research conducted by LSU offers insights into the evolution of a powerful river system and its impact on the community and environment that it touches.

The center’s interactive exhibit space offers opportunities for guests of all ages to learn more about the history of the Mississippi River, Louisiana’s disappearing wetlands, and the ongoing coastal restoration projects across the coast. By focusing on education, LSU can teach and inspire more people to take action in cleaning up and preserving their local rivers.

We know that large efforts to clean and restore local rivers add up and have the power to create a global impact, and Rivers are Life commends LSU for its local education and preservation initiatives on the Mississippi River.
