PROTECTING MICHIGAN

LOCAL IMPACT: WHY IT MATTERS

Michigan is home to over 300 rivers, all flowing into the Great Lakes, the largest freshwater system on Earth. These waterways aren’t just scenic, they’re lifelines for communities, ecosystems, and local economies. But today, they face growing threats from pollution, invasive species, and habitat loss.

That’s where Rivers are Life steps in.

PROTECTING MICHIGAN'S WATERWAYS

Rivers are Life is a network of River Heroes with a goal of completing 1,000 projects by 2050 that positively impact the world’s rivers and their watersheds - protecting the most vital habitat on earth while removing pollutants from the very sources that feed into our Great Lakes.

Through our network of local and global partners, we support innovative solutions onstream, upstream and downstream. Everything from trash cleanup and shore restoration to wildlife conservation and curbing waste supports the health and wellness of river ecosystems. From the largest rivers to the streams that run through your backyards, we work with passionate, local heroes who know these waters best.

Every story we tell, every project we work on, and every action we take is rooted in the belief that local effort drives global impact.
